Creative ideas for drawer pulls

March 21, 2009 - Mr. Armstrong

Drawer pulls like these are better than the conventional recessed slots found on most wooden cratesWooden crates that could use some handles!

When your about ready to replace your old kitchen cabinet hardware with some new ones, don’t just throw them away, why not find a way to use them for some other use.  A good example would be the old drawer pulls your replacing from your kitchen cabinetry.

With a little creative thinking, drawer pulls could be used for a variety of things including handy carrying handles installed on some old wooden crates that would make hauling them around a whole lot easier.  So instead of just simply tossing them in the garbage, try extending their life a little by putting them to some other use!

It had cabinet knob size eyeballs!

Holy cow!

I’ never forget the day when I went fishing for northern pike on a small lake in Minnesota one warm afternoon.  I had already caught 4 or 5 five pound northerns when something large took my 9 inch minnow that I was using for bait!

After setting the hook hard, I ended up with the fight of my life!  Whatever it was, decided tp pull my boat about a mile across the lake as I tried desperately to land this monster of a fish!  I finally won the battle as the big fish ended up being a 26 pound carp with eyes the size of cabinet knobs and 36 inches in length!

Not a prize catch by any means, but well worth the fight!

Suddenly the door Knob came to life!

March 19, 2009 - Cy Young
Even the door knob had a ghost!
So there I was laying in my bed one night counting sheep and trying to sleep.  When suddenly I heard a sound; a sound that went beep, beep, beep.  I opened my eyes with quite a start.  In my ears was the pounding of my heart.  What was that sound I wondered aloud, and where did it come from?
The spirit of the door had come to life with a bright flash of white light.  In my head I heard a voice.  The voice called to me and offered a choice: restore my beauty or you will pay; it said to me that very day!
I woke in a flash, morning had come; the sound of the voice in my mind still hung.  Though dream I thought it was, to the hardware store I still went.  To replace the door knob and the hinge that was bent.  I gave the door a fresh coat of paint and I shined the rest of the decorative hardware around; never again did I hear the sound.   THE END.

With the deadbolt secure, I knew that I was safe!

Fright night!

I was supposed to have been vacationing in Montana for the duration of my winter break, but the fun and excitement of it all disappeared when my snowmobile broke down in the middle of a small section of wilderness on top a lonely mountain.  Everything was fine until I decided to walk back to my cabin, which was about 4 miles down the mountain in deep snow.

As  I snowshoed my way down, I noticed a dead elk carcass lying in some brush.  But what I didn’t notice was the pack of wolves that were guarding it!  Looking back, I could see the wolves following close behind me.  Thank God the cabin was around the corner, because within seconds of closing the cabin door and locking the deadbolt to secure it, the wolves would have closed in and I would have been history!

Lesson learned;  Never go into the wilderness unprepared!

Life threatening funnel! The strength of steel!

As you all know, the beautiful state of Oklahoma is situated around some of the most volatile weather known to man.  It was a pleasant Monday afternoon when the sound of the sirens gave us that dreadful warning!  We all new this meant that a tornado had already been spotted and to take refuge in a shelter quick!

Even though we had done this quite a few times before, one’s fear of these dreadful storms never goes away.  This time as we all sat huddled together in our shelter, we could hear the unforgettable sound of those freight train like winds getting closer and closer.  The entry door to our underground shelter began to shake with such force, I thought it would be sucked away at any moment into the darkness outside.

Almost as soon as the tornado came over our shelter, it was gone just as fast leaving us frightened and shell shocked.  If it hadn’t been for the mortise lock on the shelters door, we probably would have been seriously hurt or killed.  We all thanked God and modern technology for our safety and were just happy to be alive!

Flush pulls make this door classy

So there just interior wood doors huh?  Wrong.  OK, maybe they don’t get the attention that your entry door gets, but why not give your interior doors a little something special too!  It’s just not good enough that your interior doors have a good looking finish, so maybe lets add some special unique decorative door hardware so as to enhance that beautiful finish!

An interior door can become the icon of the room that it opens up to, thus directing it’s welcome to the visitor that’s entering it.  You might select some door hardware that looks bold and strong, making one feel secure when the door is shut.  Whatever your selection, just try to remember an interior door can and should be just as important as the room it leads to, and maybe more.

Jazz up your exterior door!

exterior door

Exterior doors say a lot about your home, and your home says a lot about you.  Lets face it, a plain exterior door makes you look boring. A fresh coat of paint and new decorative hardware will spiff up any exterior door.

When choosing the paint for your exterior door you should be conscious of the color of the rest of your house.  A little bit of contrast will make your exterior door stand out.  For example, a red door on a white house would look nice and make your door stand out.  There is also several different types of door hardware you can get to spiff up your exterior door.  A door knocker for your exterior door will not only look classy in addition to a door bell, but it will also be functional.  Also, a flashy new door knob will draw your neighbors eye, while a brand new deadbolt or mortise lock will give you added security.

Ultimately, what you choose to do about your boring exterior door is your choice.  Just remember, people will like you more if you have a flashy exterior door.

Childproofing your door hardware

March 14, 2009 - Joshua Von Kleist

Safe from the outside!

A parent that is always making sure that their children are safe from any source of danger is a loving instinct that is molded deep into each and every dad or mom naturally.  Keeping our children away from any sort of danger whether at home or abroad can become a full time job, but with some of the new products that are made available now on the market, it’s a whole lot easier.

Childproofing your home should be a priority when thinking of your child’s safety.  A good example would be those dangerous electrical outlets that should be plugged up with a safety device that prevents your little ones from receiving a fatal electrical shock.  Or how about installing a childproof door knob on a certain piece of door hardware that might allow them access to something dangerous?

Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our children, so let’s keep them away from harm by adding some of those inexpensive safety devices to your home, then you’ll be able to breathe a little easier.

A front door can make a good impression on guests. Install an interesting door knocker on yours. This can give character to your property’s façade. It also gives you an opportunity to show off your good taste to oncoming visitors.Consider these tips when you’re in the market for a new door knocker:

~ Match the door knocker to your home’s general theme. A Victorian style door knocker will not go well on a modern apartment’s front door, for example.
~ Find a good door knocker that will blend well with your door’s material and color. A chrome or brass door knocker would suit a light brown-colored wooden door while a black cast iron door knocker is better matched with a dark colored door.

This entry door accessory is one of the most important pieces of decorative hardware for your home.  Nearly every home in North America has one, some have more.  Yet, almost all of them are plain and generic.  This is an easy upgrade that can separate your home from the rest of the ordinary homes on the block.

Door bells

The door bell and its cover are easy to install, and come in a wide range of prices.  Some important considerations when purchasing a doorbell cover are: style, durability, and curb appeal.  With just a few minutes and a simple screwdriver you can dramatically improve the quality of your entry door.  You can also include the door knocker, door speak easy grill cover, and decorative door knob.
