Beef Up Home Security

January 19, 2009 - HomeBound

Not all houses have fences, gates and driveways.  The majority of homes, however, understandably have locks on their doors.  Door locks keep undesirable individuals from entering other people’s dwellings, besides protecting residents from thieves and other criminals.  Some of the common locking mechanisms for house doors are the bar latch, the deadbolt, the chain, and the knob lock.

Door locks may or may not require keys.  The bar latch, the deadbolt, and the chain are all keyless door features that provide protection to homeowners and can halt or delay unwanted entries.  The knob lock, on the other hand, works with a mere press of the knob button, but needs a key to open the door from the other side. To beef up security, a number of homes have alarms and other protective devices attached to their doors, which are activated when an intruder gains entry.  The system tips off the owner that his defense has been breached through a phone call or a prolonged, piercing sound.

Get A Handle On The Right Handle

January 19, 2009 - HomeBound

doorknobs-decorativehardware4u.jpgA door wouldn’t be complete without some sort of knob or handle to open and close it with.  And because there are different kinds of doors for the various needs of people, door knobs, as you would expect, have diverse functions and types.  Doors may have knobs or levers, handle sets, or deadbolts, depending on their use and location.

Knobs or levers are the most prevalent in homes, and they provide anyone of the following purposes:  passage, privacy, or keyed entry.  A door knob or lever with a passage function usually has no locks on either side, which is typical for hall and closet doors.  Non-locking and non-latching knobs are also ideal for pantries, whose doors sometimes have only one knob or a singly dummy, and none on the other side.  Bedrooms and bathrooms by and large, need privacy, so their doors have knobs and levers that lock from inside with a turn or push button.  Nearly all front doors call for keyed entry since they are exterior doors.  The knobs on these door types use a key outside and a turn or push button lock inside. Handle sets and deadbolts on doors may be the single or double cylinder kind.  The single cylinder is keyed on the outside only, while the double cylinder requires keys on both sides.  Some handles sets may also have no latch and a non-functioning handle and deadbolt, hence they are called dummy handle sets.

Rustic Mountain Hardware

January 19, 2009 - Levi

Just like a picture!Just look at those pulls!

Just the smell of that country air is enough to keep you coming back for more, so shouldn’t the interior of your home have that same effect?  Sure, your home is made of logs and stone, but does it have that special touch that gives it that cozy character?  So maybe we should give it some of that rustic charm.

Instead of the term “decorative hardware” lets use the lesser known but well fitting phrase “mountain hardware” for your log homes interior design theme.  Maybe instead of a polished brass or chrome finish that’s used on most kitchen cabinet knobs and pulls, try a very unique and different wrought iron look that some companies have to offer when choosing your “mountain hardware”.

Just remember that the same love and charm you gave to your homes interior, is the same love and charm the blacksmith used in creating the mountain hardware that is now used in it.

Your kitchen cabinet hardware should co-inside with your interiors themeHome in the mountains

With the economy on the downward slide, many of us may have to spend a little less to do the things we had hoped for a couple of years ago.  So lets talk a little about how one can remodel our favorite kitchen for example without dipping too far into our savings.

We won’t even consider here on replacing your kitchen cabinetry because their cost alone can run extremely high, but lets focus on making the old ones look better rather than the acquiring new ones.

How about resurfacing the finish of the wood, or even a less expensive approach would be to replace the existing cabinet hardware with something new and exciting!  There’s a huge selection of drawer pulls and cabinet knobs available from various resources that one could use to enhance those old drawers and doors, keeping both you and your budget happy.  You might even consider some new switch-plate covers or maybe a unique paper towel holder added to the kitchen walls!

You would be surprised what you can do with a little imagination!

Your Lodges Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

January 16, 2009 - Trapper

The perfect mountain get-away!

Winter is on the downhill slide now towards that ever so wonderful season of Spring.  It’s that time of year when we all start thinking about what our priorities should encompass when planning our homes unique makeover.

If you are fortunate enough to own a log cabin or mountain type getaway styled lodge, you might consider choosing some very unique decorative hardware for your cabins interior.  Kitchen cabinet hardware is a good place to start, with some very beautiful rustic designs and styles that many dealers have to offer.  I like the wrought iron hammered look, but then again, we all have different tastes.

Remembering to keep in mind that choosing the right cabinet hardware for your kitchen is a fun and exciting thing to do, and the end result will be rewarding!

cabinet-knobs.jpg

There are thousands of choices of cabinet knobs out there, so it may be difficult to settle on a particular style. First you should determine what material you would like best on your cabinet door. Once the material has been decided, it will make your selection of cabinet knobs easier.

There are three different types of knobs which I will discuss: wood, plastic, and acrylic. Wood is the cheapest material out there so it is good for people on a budget. A wood knob can be painted or stained to match any cabinet. Plastic is also a low cost alternative, but it tends to look out of place when placed against a wood grain, but for wood that it painted it could fit just right. Acrylic knobs are also pretty cheap; they can look very similar to antique glass knobs, which will give your cabinetry an antique look without an antique price.  Personally, my favorite type of cabinet knob is acrylic.

Why I like Drawer Pulls

January 14, 2009 - Cy Young

Drawer pulls have been around for thousands of years.  You have to think that anything that has been around for that long has to be pretty great.  There are two reasons why I believe drawer pulls are the best invention ever.

Drawer pulls

The first reason why I believe that drawer pulls are great is because they help you grip a drawer to open it. For example, once I painted a drawer and put it back in it’s socket with out putting the drawer pull on it.  I ended up having to use a screwdriver to pry my drawer out of it’s socket.  The second reason why I believe that drawer pulls are great is because they add decoration to a drawer.  Could you imagine a drawer with out a pull?  I know that I certainly can not.

So are you considering purchasing a drawer pull.  Just remember that drawer pulls are not door hardware.
