Ha Ha Decorative Hardware, Right!

April 16, 2009 - Mountainman

Gun fightOne of those Cloudy full moon nights as I rode the old White mare into town.  The saloon looked full and I was a bit on the thirsty side, the heat had dried me to the bones.  I went straight to the bar and ordered a Shot of Whiskey and had my canteen filled.  Sure does taste good as I took the shot and drained the water down.

There was an older well dressed fella in a long blue overcoat at the other end of the bar staring straight at me with hate written all over his face.  He was one mean lookin cowboy and I had no intention in startin a brawl. He was wearing a very fancy six shooter on his belt, you might say a showy piece of decorative hardware with a bullet in it waiting to send me hell at any given moment.  What is this guys problem I thought to myself…………..and then I woke up from a heavy sleep still shaking from a bad dream.  All I could think about was that hardware.  It was the decorations that had made that cowboy, not the man hiding behind them.

Suddenly the door Knob came to life!

Even the door knob had a ghost!
So there I was laying in my bed one night counting sheep and trying to sleep.  When suddenly I heard a sound; a sound that went beep, beep, beep.  I opened my eyes with quite a start.  In my ears was the pounding of my heart.  What was that sound I wondered aloud, and where did it come from?
The spirit of the door had come to life with a bright flash of white light.  In my head I heard a voice.  The voice called to me and offered a choice: restore my beauty or you will pay; it said to me that very day!
I woke in a flash, morning had come; the sound of the voice in my mind still hung.  Though dream I thought it was, to the hardware store I still went.  To replace the door knob and the hinge that was bent.  I gave the door a fresh coat of paint and I shined the rest of the decorative hardware around; never again did I hear the sound.   THE END.

Truly unique!

If it wasn’t for the dedicated blacksmith, door handles like the one above wouldn’t show the unique detail that this one has and wouldn’t even exist.  Can you imagine the amount of time that it took to create this beautiful piece of wrought iron decorative hardware, with it’s spiral shaped handles and the breathtaking rust colored finish!

Take a little time from your busy lifestyle and go visit your local blacksmith for a couple of hours just to see for yourself what it takes to handcraft such a marvelous piece of iron art!  We often think of blacksmithing as a thing of the past, but to this day there are still a couple of hardworking talented blacksmiths that keep this long forgotten trade alive.

!

Ever so beautiful and elegant!

Have you ever considered your decorative hardware such as the door knobs, drawer pulls,  cabinet knobs, switch-plate covers, towel rings or even the toilet paper holder that sits in the bathroom the Arabian horse of all hardware?  Have you then not seen an artistically handcrafted piece of wrought iron hardware that was formed by a hardworking blacksmith?

Well look no further!  Decorative hardware that was formed from a raw chunk of iron, then pounded to perfection from a hammer and anvil is something to behold!  Yes, there are still blacksmith companies that handcraft all kinds of decorative hardware from raw iron, and still to this day form some of the most beautiful unique pieces ever.  Check out and see what the world has to offer by searching the web and maybe you’ll find the Black beauty of iron only a fingertip away!

Remembering the “real” door bell

March 1, 2009 - Trapper

Go ahead, ring away!

Does anyone remember what a real door bell is?  Maybe we should all go back a couple of hundred years, or even take a trip back to the old country of London England and take a walk down those old cobbled streets just to take a look at what type of door bells were used way back then?

Yep, you guessed it, a real honest to goodness bell that hung right on the wall,  just to the side of the front entry door!  Sometimes with all rush and fuss of our busy daily lives, we often overlook the simplest definitions or terms of everyday words or phrases such as the one above, only to find out their true meaning with just a “ring” of the bell.

Do You Think Cave Men Used a Toilet Paper Holder?

February 13, 2009 - Mountainman

toilet paper holder

Ok, now obviously I know that cave men did not have toilet paper, so they would not need a toilet paper holder.  Maybe they just used a flat rock to stack their leaves on; or maybe they carried them around in a pouch. The idea of cave man hygiene is very perplexing.  Many scholars have spent a lifetime pondering this question.

Honestly, I believe that cave men had toilet paper holders.  In fact not only did they have toilet paper holders, but they also had shockingly elaborate sets of bathroom hardware in their dens. A Cave man bathroom had many common bathroom accessories in it such as a towel ring and a paper towel holder.  You may not believe me, but their is archaeological evidence that supports this idea.  I encourage anyone who reads this article to do their own research on this fascinating topic.

I think it’s time to replace this worn out but well used door hardwareNow it’s time to install some new door hardware that has the same appearance as the old hardware

Restoration hardwareis not necessarily the original door hardware, cabinet hardware or any other form of decorative hardware that was used on that which it is replacing.  Remember you are restoring your old worn out maybe rusty door hardware with one that is new.

That’s not to say that the new piece of decorative hardware that’s replacing the existing one doesn’t look old or worn, for it probably should if your trying to restore a particular look or era.  So don’t get confused with the word replica unless your actually trying to duplicate or create to a carbon copy the door hardware your replacing.

Deciding on the right restoration hardware

When you are restoring an old building, whether it is residential or commercial it is important to keep the authenticity alive.  Unless you are renovating the entire structure including the architecture, it is important to understand the era the original building was built.  In order to determine the style of your building you need to take note of many different structural elements as well as the year it was built and the region of the country it was built in.

To choose the right restoration hardware and keep the authenticity of your building, do some research.  Look at other buildings in your area that were built in the same era and see what they have in them.  Online research on time periods and building trends in style and materials can also be very helpful.  The best thing to do is to re-use as much of the lasting materials as you can from your building, and if the hardware is just to worn out to repair, there is a number of places online that will provide custom orders and can re-create an individual piece, for a price.

My New Door

January 12, 2009 - Cy Young

dads-dogs-2009.jpg

Last night my dogs finally destroyed my door.  They have no manners at all.  Every time they want to get in the house they jump and scratch at the door.  Of course I always let them in when they do this because I do not want them to destroy the door.  Well last night my husband had the bright idea that we would just ignore them, in an effort to train them that when they bang on the door they can not come in. I could not believe it when they knocked the door down. Not only did they knock the door down but they also tore it apart by biting and scratching it.

The next day me and my husband started shopping for a new door.  After dragging my husband around town all day we finally found the perfect door at our local door store.  It was large and metal. We installed it with nine five inch wood screws,  and to make sure the dogs could not scratch this one up we installed a large steel kick plate and a sturty steel door knob complete with a deadbolt.  There is no way these dogs are taking down this door.
